Real Stories of Love and Support

Pet Peace of Mind has touched the lives of countless patients and their pets during their most challenging times. Take a look at some of their heartwarming stories.

A TALE OF TOOTSIE

A hospice nurse went to visit a patient but there was no answer at the door. She looked in the window and saw the patient on the floor with her dog, Tootsie, beside her. The police were called for entry. The patient was taken to the ER and later placed in a skilled nursing facility. Since no family or friends were able to take care of Tootsie, she was brought to the hospice’s office. A hospice aide took her to the groomer for a badly needed bath and nail trim. A supervisor took her home for fostering for four weeks. Tootsie was unable to eat because of painful teeth. The team brought her to the veterinarian and paid for vaccinations and $1,100 for extractions of 10 badly infected teeth. After searching for the perfect family, they found a loving home for her. A nurse obtained permission from the facility to take her for one final visit to see her owner to provide the assurance Tootsie would be loved and to facilitate a final goodbye. Several months later the Pet Peace of Mind team received an email from Tootsie’s new human. “I am the person who adopted sweet Tootsie. Unfortunately, she passed on a few weeks ago. One minute she was enjoying our morning walk, the next she was in clear distress. I wish we had more time with her, but there are no guarantees in life and we’re grateful that we could give her a good life for a short time. Before seeing the post about Tootsie, I had no idea there was such a thing as a hospice program that considers pets. Thank you for all you do.” This lovely story of caring and compassion has one final detail…Tootsie and her previous owner died on the same day. In Pet Peace of Mind’s work supporting the human-animal bond, they often encounter stories that cannot be explained by mere coincidence. With each one, they stand in awe of the bond they work to support and are humbled and honored to provide this program for patients in need of assistance.

SASSY'S STORY

Sassy is a pretty Tabby cat who had lived happily with her human (Ms. W) since she was a kitten. Her human was very loving and took very good care of her. They had been through many trials and tribulations together and were very close. As the years went by, Ms. W began to have health problems. Eventually the doctor said it was time for her to be put on hospice. Sassy began to lay down beside Ms. W on the couch or bed, giving her devotion and love. During a visit by the Volunteer Manager, Ms. W expressed her concern for Sassy’s well-being after she was gone. However, she was not ready to take the next step and wanted Sassy by her side. Ms. W began to transition and eventually was actively dying. Sassy did not understand what was happening and never left her side. One day, Ms. W did not wake up. Sassy was confused and watched as the funeral home picked up Ms. W. Sassy refused to come out from under the bed or table. Ms. W’s brother tried to get her out of the house, but Sassy would not leave. He could not care for Sassy and needed to find her a home. He managed to coax Sassy out, and the hospice Volunteer Manager found someone to take Sassy the next day. The adoptee was a sister of one of the hospice aides. The sister already had a cat and had recently lost another. She knew Sassy would be happy at her home and she knew how to take care of cats. Sassy is doing well and adjusting to her new loving home!

PAULEY'S NEW PLACE

Pet Peace of Mind partners realize the human-animal bond does not just apply to dogs and cats, and often care for horses, reptiles, and even birds. A patient was concerned about going on hospice service because he was worried about his Maccaw, Pauley, who is 26 years old. He didn’t want to send her to a rescue, as there wasn’t one close to where he lives. Debra, a nurse, agreed to meet Pauley since she has a large sunroom and thought Pauley would love it. She was concerned because she has two small dogs and Pauley was an only pet. Pauley came to her house for a trial run, and it was perfect! Pauley came to her, got on her arm and sat on her shoulder. The patient told Debra that she had never gone to anyone else but him in all the time he has had her. He said he knew “Debra was sent from God.” The patient and his sister have been able to visit Pauley occasionally and although he has a lot of pain, he feels better because he is no longer worried about Pauley’s future. Pauley has adjusted well to her new home. She talks up a storm and even tells Debra when it is time to make supper:) Debra and her family have fallen in love with Pauley as well.

A TALE OF TOOTSIE

A hospice nurse found a patient on the floor with her dog, Tootsie, by her side. After the patient was hospitalized, the hospice team cared for Tootsie, providing grooming, dental surgery, and fostering. They later found her a loving home and arranged a final visit with her owner for a goodbye. This was made possible due to the effective hospice training of Pet Peace of Mind.

SASSY'S STORY

Sassy, a beloved tabby, shared a deep bond with her human, Ms. W, who entered hospice care. Thanks to the hospice training provided by Pet Peace of Mind, Sassy stayed by her side until Ms. W passed. Afterward, the hospice team found her a loving home with a hospice aide's sister, where she is now thriving.

PAULEY'S NEW PLACE

Thanks to Pet Peace of Mind, patients like Pauley's owner can find comfort knowing their pets are cared for. A hospice patient was reluctant to enter care, worried about his 26-year-old macaw, Pauley. Nurse Debra offered her home for a trial run, and Pauley bonded with her immediately. Now, the patient visits Pauley occasionally, relieved she’s thriving in a loving home with Debra and her family, allowing him to focus on his own care.
